Dogs are the animals that are liked by many people. People love to have dog as a pet. The reason is that dogs show lots of affection to the owner. Some breeds of dogs are used to protect the house or farm. Some other breeds are reared only for their beautiful look. Some other breeds are so small that they are used as toy animals. Having the dog at home is easy. But the problem is health of the dog.
Maintaining health of the dog is very important as there are so many diseases are there [bacterial, viral, fungus, metabolic diseases etc]. Let us discuss about the vaccines that help to protect the dogs from killer diseases, how they work, are they safe etc.
Immunizing the dogs against the viral diseases is the common practice in the pet clinics. Though these vaccinations appear as if they are simple there are so many misconceptions and doubts about the vaccines. Let us get cleared some of the misconceptions here.
Vaccine - how does it work?
The vaccines do not work as the other medication like anti bacterial. The vaccines stimulate the immune system of the dog against a particular disease depending on the vaccine given. Suppose the rabies vaccine [killed rabies virus] is given to the dog, the organism present in the vaccine will be considered as a foreign body and more antibodies will be produced in the body which will bind or destroy the infectious agent.
When actual infection with the same virus occurs, the cells in the body of the dog will remember and recognize the infectious agent and required antibodies will be generated more quickly in addition to the already existing antibodies against the same infectious agent. This is the reason that the infectious agent cannot set up the infection in already immunized dog.
How far the vaccines are safe?
The vaccines are absolutely safe, as there were lot more research and trials have gone in to it. The vaccines do contain the infectious agent that is either killed or removed of its disease producing capabilities. There are so many procedures like egg passaging, chemical deactivation etc are in use to make the vaccine absolutely free of disease producing capacity
Vaccine reactions-what are their implications?
Vaccine reactions are like mild fever, pain; muscle aches are common when vaccines are given against few diseases like leptospirosis. These vaccine reactions are noticed mostly in puppies and toy breed dogs. Giving antihistamines at the time of injection of the vaccine can reduce the vaccine reactions. In a way, the vaccine reactions are indication that the vaccine is very effective.
If dog's viral problems are taken care, health of dog can be maintained without much ado.
